ABOUT CAMP CROIX

The Camp Beneath The Cross

Camp Croix is a non-profit organization in fellowship with the Wisconsin Evangelical Lutheran Synod. The St Croix Conference of WELS churches, which is comprised of about 45 congregations, owns and operates the camp. However, many more congregations and groups around Wisconsin and Minnesota support and utilize the camp. Camp Croix’s purpose is to offer Christian programs in an outdoor environment with all such programs being governed by the Word of God and a spirit of love.

Camp Croix has been a place of retreat and fellowship for youth, adults, church groups and families since 1951. The land, as it exists today, was purchased in 1968. It consists of 160 acres located on Rooney Lake in northwestern Wisconsin. The property features 2100 feet of lake shore to enjoy swimming, boating and water activities. There are 15 camping sites, 35 rustic cabins, a main lodge, the Lakeside Cottage, the year round Hillside Cottage, a bathroom/shower facility, and an enclosed picnic shelter. The Camp operates year-round with limited facilities available during the winter months.

The Camp Croix Board believes that Camp Croix can enhance the value it provides to the Association congregations by providing a setting and infrastructure for a broader range of ministry activities, while continuing and building upon the existing programs of Youth Bible Camp and Family Camp.  The Camp Croix Association began a ministry planning and master planning process during the winter of 2016. Please visit Looking Ahead for additional information regarding the future of Camp Croix.

The Lodge

The lodge has six bedrooms, two bathrooms, a large gathering area with a large fireplace equipped with a projector and screen, dining room, screened in porch that overlooks the lake. The lodge can sleep up to 18. Three of the bedrooms have two double beds and three rooms have one double bed. Dressers are provided in each bedroom. There is refrigeration and a residential kitchen fully equipped with appliances, utensils and dishes for use by anyone at camp. For larger groups, our commercial kitchen is available for rent as well.

The large gathering space and dining room makes a perfect place for holding retreats, Bible studies, or devotions. It also provides an indoor setting for dining and enjoying fellowship. The fireplace creates an intimate setting. Enjoying God’s creation in the Northwoods around a fire with brothers and sisters in Christ is one of the best things in life! Heat is available in the lodge year-round, but it currently does not have running water or plumbing during the winter months.

The Cabins

There are currently 35 rustic cabins separated into two “villages” on the property. Each insulated cabin is fitted with two bunk beds, table and chairs, a dresser, and a clothing rod. The cabins have a screen door and windows that open to allow the cool summer breeze to come through. Though cabins do not have running water or heat, you do have access to the shower/bathroom facility that is centrally located in the camp.

Camp Sites

We have 15 camp sites, including primitive sites, sites with electric service, or sites with electric and water service. RV waste dump is available at the nearby St. Croix Casino Hertel Express in Webster. Many of our camp sites come with a fire ring and picnic table to enjoy cooking and dining in the great outdoors.
